Graham Potter was happy with what he saw in West Ham’s preseason friendly against Manchester United.

Preseason is not only about building fitness, it’s about working out who the manager wants in his squad and what works and doesn’t work.

Despite many glaring weak points (the senior midfielders and Areola in particular), there was some real positive to take from the game, Graham Potter believes.

“Mistakes are part of football and certainly at this stage, it’s the first game for us really, certainly in this type of environment so you’re going to get a little bit of that,” he told the official site. “But I thought the spirit of the team, the personality of the team over the course of the game was positive.”

“There was a connection there with the group, so that’s really good. We just have to iron those out, which is normal, and then move on to Wednesday.”

Easily the biggest positives were the performances of some of the young players, “Freddie and Preston, in particular, you could see the quality they bring, what type of players they are.”

On top of their performances, Jarrod Bowen once again showed his quality in front of goal with an superb strike. “The play up to getting the ball to Jarrod was really, really good,” Potter explained.

“I think it was JC (Jean-Clair Todibo) and then Tomáš [Souček], and then once you get Jarrod in those situations he can go either side. It was a fantastic finish. I was just right behind him and it was a great goal.”

Our Irons face Everton next in the United States, it should be about the time that we start seeing exactly what sort of role each player will have, whether that be a starter or a squad player.
