After a slow start to the summer transfer window, West Ham’s business sparked into life with the signings of fullbacks El Hadji Malick Diouf and Kyle Walkers Peters. Reports suggest that more deals are being worked on behind the scenes, with additional arrivals expected in East London.
As is the case every summer, West Ham have been linked with a host of players. Alongside their two summer signings in Diouf and Walker Peters, the Club have also been linked with the likes of Mads Hermansen, Tyler Morton, Harvey Elliot and James McAtee.
With it being a very important summer for the Hammers, many supporters grew massively frustrated with West Ham’s slow start to the window. The Hammers two summer signings so far lifted morale amongst fans and sparked hope of more positive things to come across the remainder of the summer.
The mood quickly nosedived and frustrations returned thanks to the news that West Ham are reportedly close to signing former Newcastle and Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson. At 33, Wilson is in the latter stages of his career. Whilst he brings plenty of Premier League experience and a good goal scoring record, his injury record is a real concern. He feels far removed from the profile of player West Ham should be targeting this summer.
Harvey Elliot is a link that has captured the attention of the Hammers faithful. It remains to be seen whether West Ham can get a deal over the line as reports have varied in regards to Liverpool’s potential asking price.
That being said, West Ham news site KUMB have reported Elliot has already agreed personal terms with the Hammers after conversations with manager Graham Potter. KUMB’s source claims that Elliot is keen to move this summer with his opportunities at Liverpool likely to be very limited moving forward.
The source also stated: “The Reds are happy to allow the player to leave having spent north of £300 million this summer.”
It remains to be seen whether the Hammers ultimately get a deal wrapped up for the 22 year old midfielder in the coming weeks.
Mads Hermansen has been repeatedly linked with West Ham so far this summer. Following Lukasz Fabianski’s departure, the goalkeeping department is certainly an area of the squad that needs strengthening. The Daily Mail have claimed that the Club are set to make their move and table a bid for the Leicester shot stopper imminently.
Casper Ankergren, who worked with Hermansen at Brondby, was appointed West Ham’s lead goalkeeping coach earlier this summer. It is felt this could boost the Hammers chances of landing the Danish keeper.
Reports in recent days suggest Callum Wilson is close to finalising his move to West Ham. His impending signing has angered many fans, with online reaction to the news overwhelmingly negative. Wilson appears to be yet another David Sullivan driven signing of a Will Salthouse client, rather than one led by the manager and the Club’s recruitment team. This points to a potential disconnect behind the scenes in the recruitment process, with David Sullivan remaining rather stuck in his ways.
With the ball now rolling, West Ham appear to be well placed to complete more deals in the coming weeks. The Club will look to continue their pursuit of Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliot, although a potential deal now appears less likely than previously.
