West Ham need to make a fast start this season, or the current positive vibes at the club will die out quickly.
The feel-good factor within the club is very high at the moment. We’ve heard from a lot of the players about how positive the vibes are and how much time the squad is spending with each other. However, that could all change quickly.
The majority of the fans have been happy with our performances and fitness in pre-season so far; however, what they aren’t happy about is the transfer window. It looked like it was going to be full of positives when we signed Potter and Macauley’s number one left-back target. However, since then, Walker-Peters and Callum Wilson have signed, two players Potter didn’t want but were reportedly signed because of David Sullivan’s relationship with their agent.
Our next signing looks set to be Botafogo goalkeeper Victor John. He is yet another signing that looks like he is a David Sullivan signing rather than a Graham Potter signing. The longer this keeps going on, Potter is going to get annoyed because he’s not getting his targets, and the fans will get even more annoyed for the same reason.
If this continues for the rest of the window and we get off to a poor start in the Premier League, it could be a recipe for disaster, and it could really start becoming negative at the club. Sunderland away is a tough start, with it being their first game back in the top flight in years. That is followed up by a home match against the champions of the world, Chelsea, so the first two could very easily end in defeat.
However, let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. Some of the recent transfer links in Jacob Ramsey and Exequiel Palacios are players that are much more likely to be Graham Potter targets, so if we can get those, the fanbase will be a lot more optimistic and understandable if we were to have a slow start to the season. If not, it is crucial that we have a good start.
