Opinion: West Ham would do just fine if they made no further signings this Summer.
With the Premier League season less than a week away from commencing, there’s a good chance West Ham’s current squad will remain unchanged before their opening game against Sunderland.
While there are obvious areas that the club can improve upon, preseason has suggested that this squad is more than capable of doing better than last season for a number of reasons.
Firstly, there’s the obvious new additions. Diouf is already looking like a steal, Walker-Peters is a great option, and Hermansen is an absolute bargain at under £20 million. Wilson may be a frustrating signing, but for the structure of his deal it isn’t as bad as many first feared. On top of this, you’ve got exciting youngsters coming through, particularly Potts who will be almost like a new signing too. With Summerville also to return from injury, this again will feel like a further addition,
Secondly, the whole mood of the squad seems better. The videos released from the training camps have been a genuine joy to watch. With some of the more troublesome individuals gone, the players seem to genuinely seem to be loving life in claret and blue – which is something we haven’t seen since before Moyes departed.
Finally, preseason hints that we will get the best out of players who underperformed last year. There’s the aforementioned Summerville who, admittedly, looked great before his injury, and was a massive loss to Potter. Fullkrug has also looked great having slimmed down and properly rested; he could be a vital player this year. Aguerd could potentially be a different player from the confidence gained during his loan spell, and Todibo might finally be fully fit.
This isn’t to mention the fact that the Hammers actually played some good football, at times at least.
The midfield definitely needs some work, and a centre-back wouldn’t go a miss either, but even without these I think our Irons might surprise us this season. I’m not saying a European push or anything outrageous, but perhaps a season where we’re not fighting relegation again.
