Sunderland could be without their new signings, Marc Guiu and Arthur Masuaku for their Premier League opener vs West Ham.

West Ham United travel to the Stadium of Light expecting to be without just Crysencio Summerville due to a thigh injury and Callum Wilson due to a lack of match sharpness. However, the black cats have it slightly worse.

Former Hammers defender Ajibola Alese will miss the match with a shoulder injury, as will midfielder Luke O’Nein. Leo Fuhr Hjelde is out with an Achilles injury, while Romaine Mundle will miss the game due to a problem with his thigh. However, these certain injuries aren’t a huge deal as they wouldn’t be in contention to start anyway.

What could be a problem for Regis Le Bris is that he could be missing his two latest signings, Marc Guiu and Arthur Masuaku.

Guiu played no part in the 3-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano at the weekend, and his manager admitted after the game that Chelsea’s on-loan striker may need to work on his match fitness before he can feature for the Black Cats.

Le Bris said: “We are still in the process to improve the squad, and progressively new signings like these two will help the squad, even if they started later. So, we’ll have to be patient with them, to build their foundations for the season.’

In a separate interview with Northern Echo, Le Bris was asked about the availability of Guiu and Masuaku for the game at home to West Ham this Saturday.

“We’ll see,” Le Bris said. “Every day we will make an assessment of their level and see how far we can push them through the training sessions. Lift the intensity, the contact. If they react well, they can then join the squad. If they don’t react well, we wait one day, two day and assess again. So we will see for next week.’

It would be good to see Masuaku playing against his old club on Saturday. Despite not being the best player in East London, he was a favourite of the fans, and he will no doubt get a great reception from the travelling fans if he is fit enough to play a part.
