West Ham legend says he feels sorry for duo who were left isolated against Sunderland.

An opening day thrashing has left West Ham fans desperate for the club to make some signings in the coming days.

Unfortunately, a lot of the Hammers’ recruitment in recent years has been underwhelming.

While neither have had a proper chance to shine, although both for different reasons, Diouf and Fullkrug have the potential to be massive players this season.

However, club legend Tony Cottee suggests that Graham Potter didn’t set up in a way where either player could shine.

“[The recruitment has been] dreadful. The players don’t always seem to fit into the system. I mean, they paid a lot of money for Fullkrug and he didn’t look like scoring at the weekend,” Cottee told talkSPORT.

“Paqueta had one of those games. He’s a wonderful player but sometimes he gives the ball away and doesn’t get involved. Fullkrug, he just wasn’t involved in the game but they didn’t get the ball wide!”

“Modern day football! Pass, pass, pass, pass, pass. Just get the ball wide and get some crosses in! The earlier the cross comes in, the better it is for the centre-forward.”

“I felt sorry for Diouf. He was screaming for the ball and he just didn’t get the ball in a position where he could cross it!”

The fullback has a deadly cross on him, one that Fullkrug will thrive off. It’s vital that they’re allowed the opportunity to link up as much as possible because it’s almost guaranteed goals.
