Another bad performance against Chelsea this evening could really damage West Ham United.
Graham Potter’s West Ham side host Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea tonight on Friday Night Football, if they don’t improve a lot from their defeat at Sunderland and lose heavily again, the fans could really kick off.
Hammers fans are fuming at the board at the moment because of the transfer window. While we’ve made four singings and the majority of fans are happy with three of them, we haven’t addressed what is our biggest issue.
The midfield isn’t good at all, we have five first-team midfielders after loaning out Edson Alvarez and not one of them is good enough to play in the system Potter wants to play. We needed to bring in two mobile and defensively sound midfielders at the start of the summer, and with ten days left of the window we haven’t signed any midfielder.
Not only the board, the fans also aren’t happy with Graham Potter and you can’t blame them. He showed nothing to get excited about last season, and the squad really hasn’t improved from last season, so what is there to be excited about after losing 3-0 to a newly promoted side on the opening day.
What would have calmed the fans down ahead of this match was to have signed a new midfielder in the 6 days we’ve had since the Sunderland defeat, but the fact we haven’t and we’re not even any closer to signing one just feels Hammers fans with dread coming into this match.
Obviously it’s going to be hard to beat Chelsea this evening because of their quality all over the pitch, but if we lose heavily and put up no fight to even try and beat them, the London Stadium could become toxic quickly and we can’t afford that to happen at the start of the season, or we could be in serious trouble.
Home form is absolutely crucial in a relegation battle and the former Olympic Stadium is a horrible place to play as a home team when the fans aren’t behind you.
