West Ham United face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup this evening, and a win is a must for Graham Potter.
After a woeful start to the season and many expecting us to be in a relegation battle this season, you are right in saying we have bigger priorities than the Carabao Cup this season.
However, after two defeats. belief in manager Graham Potter fading away and talk of him being sacked, if West Ham lose again to a struggling Wolves side which is expected to be rotated, the manager could well lose his job this month.
It remains to be seen what Potter if going to do, is he going to keep the team the same, is he going to completely rotate, or is he going to stick with a similar team and change formation. In my opinion it should be the latter.
The back 5 isn’t working at all, the wing-backs aren’t pushing up enough and we’re getting exploited out wide, and we’re not getting the best out of Jarrod Bowen in a front two. We have to change to a back four with wide players to get the best out of or best player.
Potter can’t afford a loss in this game, a defeat tonight and another one away at Nottingham Forest could mean the end of his spell with the Hammers. So, tonight he has to go with the strongest team to get a win under his belt and to go into the Forest game with some renewed optimism.
However, if we go full strength and lose to what could well be a rotated Wolves team it would confirm that Potter isn’t the man for the job and the board may have to act sooner than they’d like. Obviously, if we rotate too and lose it won’t be quite as damming for Potter, but another loss is only edging him and his staff closer to losing their jobs.
