West Ham’s win against Forest was brilliant, but it must not be used as an excuse to avoid deadline day deals.

Even the biggest Graham Potter haters would have to admit that West Ham’s performance in their 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest is the best they’ve seen in a long time.

While this isn’t particularly saying much given the levels that have been shown since Moyes left, it was easily the most enjoyable experience I’ve had watching the Hammers in well over a year.

The switch to a back four worked excellently, the narrowness of the midfield meant they weren’t overrun, and the dynamism that Summerville brought when he came on changed the game. Overall, it was a great performance.

However, while we must rightfully celebrate what went well, we must not allow this to let a vital deadline day pass without movement. We’ve seen before how prone the defence are to mistakes, and if Aguerd leaves particularly we must sign a defender, not doing so would be unacceptable.

Additionally, we must be trying to improve in other areas of the pitch. Fulkrug has been woeful so far this season, and Wilson’s injury record says he will not be able to start week-in, week-out. If the board has any ambition to move this club away from fighting relegation, a striker will be signed too.

Obviously there’s other areas which could be added to, namely keeper and a further midfielder, but I think today’s performance shows where our priorities should lie. Hopefully a clean sheet will help Hermansen build confidence, and Magassa could be the final piece to the puzzle in the middle of the park. Two smart signings could really change this season.
