Konstantinos Mavropanos, West Ham fans may owe you a huge apology.

I’ll be the first to admit, Mavropanos is someone I have ridiculed time and time again. Since he joined, he’s been riddled with mistakes, cost his side many points, and just been extremely frustrating to watch. It felt like every time he stepped onto the pitch, he’d make a huge error leading to a goal.

However, after his performance against Nottingham Forest, I have to say the majority of the fanbase may have got this one wrong.

Dinos’ put in an unbelievable defensive display at the City Ground, one in which he didn’t get dribbled past once. Forest were limited to very few chances, with only one or two being “good” ones.

We all know the main problem has been the midfield which adds untold pressure onto the defence, and could this have been why Mavropanos was performing so poorly?

After all, the times we conceded because of him were often due to him being out of position, but would he have had to have pushed so far out if the midfield were doing their job? Probably not.

A back four is clearly where he’s at his best, and if he can perform like that consistently it would eradicate one of the Irons’ biggest issues.

He’s always played well for 90% of a match, but those big mistakes let him down. Maybe, just maybe, he could be about to make me and many others eat our words. Igor has come in to provide competition, so let’s see if the Greek can cement his place in the starting XI.
