West Ham United have hired Nuno Espírito Santo to replace the sacked Graham Potter, but is he the right man for the job?

The Hammers finally decided to pull the plug on Graham Potter last night after eight poor months in charge of the team, and just a few hours later Nuno was announced as the clubs new manager.

The hiring of Nuno has led to a mixed reaction from West Ham fans, some think he’s the perfect man for the job, some think he’s the best of a pretty bad bunch, while others believe it’s going to be a disaster.

Nuno Espírito Santo is a tough one to call, he’s had a pretty chaotic spell in management, which may make him the perfect man for a chaotic club like West Ham.

The 51-year-old has only spent more that two years at one club. He started his managerial career in his homeland with Rio Ave, before spending a year at both Valencia and Porto.

He then made the switch to England with Wolverhampton Wanderers, he was part of the Jorge Mendes revolution at the club which bought in Nuno alongside players like Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota.

He took the midlands side from the Championship to European football, spending four great years last the club and becoming adored by the fans. Nuno left the club in 2021 with both parties agreeing it was the right time after a hugely successful spell.

Nuno joined Tottenham Hotspur the same summer and it was a complete disaster, he was sacked after just 17 matches, despite winning the manager of the month award in August of 2021. Nuno then made a move to Saudi with Al-Ittihad where he won the club’s first ever league title.

The former goalkeeper then made a move back to the Premier League with Nottingham Forest where he well and truly got his reputation back on track. Forest were excellent last season, they were in the top four for the majority of the season, before going on to finish 7th.

Despite giving Forest their best season in decades, Nuno was sacked by Forest earlier this month because of off the field problems. Constant rifts between Nuno and owner Evangelos Maranakis and sporting director Edu Gaspar led to them parting ways, despite huge success.

The biggest question mark surrounding Nuno is, will he have similar problems working with Sullivan and Brady at West Ham? The answer to that is probably not, as much as West Ham fans dislike Sullivan, he isn’t anywhere near as controlling as Maranakis is at Forest.

However, if Sullivan brings players in without the managers say-so, like he did with Callum Wilson and Kyle Walker-Peters this summer, that is where it could all start to go wrong with Nuno. But, the Portuguese has a completely different character, so the owners probably wouldn’t take the risk of upsetting hum.

I think Nuno will definitely succeed with West Ham in the short-term, I am certain he’ll keep us in the Premier League very comfortably and make us better side going into the next transfer window where he can make his stamp on the team.

It’s very unlikely he’s going to be here long-term, but the state we were in we are lucky we managed to get a manager of his quality because we were really in danger of going down.
