West Ham left the Hill Dickinson Stadium with a hard earned point on Monday night after battling back from a goal down against Everton, with Club captain Jarrod Bowen praising the resilience shown by his teammates in Nuno Espirito Santo’s first game as Hammers boss.
Everton took the lead 18 minutes in as the Hammers were once again undone by a cross in to the box. James Garner delivered an inviting ball into the box which Michael Keane rose highest to meet, powering his header past Alphonse Areola to give David Moyes’ side the lead.
The Hammers were impressive in the second half, creating a number of goal scoring opportunities and causing the hosts some real problems. Jarrod Bowen levelled the game with 25 minutes to go as he fired home with a composed finish on his left.
West Ham did enough in the latter stages to thwart any potential threat from Everton and held on to secure a point. Overall, the Everton game was certainly a positive night’s work and a promising start to life at West Ham for Nuno.
Speaking after the game, skipper Jarrod Bowen felt the Hammers had earned a valuable point. “I think it’s a big point for us. Our mindset was to come and get the win, as it always is, but I think that’s a good result.” said the England international.
Discussing the challenge of facing a side like Everton and the teams determination to find a way back into the game after going a goal down, Bowen told West Ham TV: “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy coming here, because they’re a good side and they’ve got a loud, loyal fanbase, but I always felt we could get back into the game, no matter how long it took.”
Breaking down the move that led to his equaliser, as well as his confidence in front of goal, Bowen noted: “Malick and Cry linked up well all game, and Malick showed really good work rate to get down the flank and put the ball into the box, that needed defending. It fell to me, and in that sort of position, I don’t feel like I can be stopped, because I know what I’m going to do before they do.”
Looking ahead to the Hammers next game away at the Emirates against Arsenal, West Ham’s no. 20 emphasised the team’s desire to build on the positive result against Everton: “I thought there were excellent performances throughout the team tonight, and we just want to build on that away at Arsenal on Saturday now.”
