George Earthy marked his comeback from injury in style, scoring one and providing an assist as West Ham’s U21 side beat Swindon Town to secure their place in the Vertu Trophy knockout stages.

Returning from a month out with a hamstring injury, Earthy was given a 45 minute run out at the County Ground, and the 21 year old took the opportunity with both hands. The young midfielder was involved in both first half goals as the Hammers took control of the tie before the break.

Earthy watched the second half from the substitutes bench as West Ham fought off a late fightback from Swindon and sealed a 3-2 win. The victory confirmed the Hammers place in the competition’s knockout stages for the second time in the last three years.

Speaking after full time, Earthy discussed taking things steady in his first game after his injury. “This game was about getting back to match fitness. I was always only going to play 45 minutes, just to get minutes in my legs. Obviously I wanted to play the second half, but you can’t overdo it in your first game back!” said Earthy.

Despite a lineup packed with a number of last season’s U18’s, Earthy, who made 37 appearances in the Championship on loan at Bristol City last season, provided valuable know how to a young Hammers side and helped them handle Swindon’s direct, physical style.

Earthy has returned to the U21’s set up to get minutes under his belt after his injury struggles in recent months. He has played a key role in the three matches he’s started registering five goal contributions.

Having helped the U21’s navigate their way through a difficult group stage, Earthy reflected on the demands of these games and the standards the squad have set. “These games against men are different. You really notice the physical side. Being able to cope with it and still win is what matters most. Getting through the group is never easy. We’ve set a good standard by getting this far, and now the boys will want to push on.”
