West Ham have reignited their interest in signing Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell in January, according to talkSPORT.
The Hammers have been very poor at the back this season, it has improved under Nuno, but we still need to improve the personnel. Charlie Cresswell would be an improvement on Todibo, Kilman and Mavropanos.
Not only is the England U21 international an excellent defender both on the ground and aerially, he’s also a threat in the opposition box from corners. Goals from corners is something we have been missing since David Moyes left, Cresswell can help with that.
Speaking to talkSPORT, European football expert Andy Brassell drew comparisons between Charlie Cresswell and PSG, AC Milan, Chelsea and football legend Thiago Silva.
“Charlie Cresswell’s not new,” Brassell said. “He’s been in France for a couple of years now, and he’s settled; he knows the league. I think his physical power lends to it pretty well as well.
“It sort of recalls, like a Thiago Silva, someone who’s a real threat in the opposition penalty box, who’s got real smarts about him.”
The former Leeds man left England to join the Ligue 1 club in July 2024 in search of more top level first-team opportunities. He has been excellent for the violets, but the club themselves haven’t pulled up many trees.
The 23-year-old was in with an outside shout of making Tomas Tuchel’s England squad, however, he opted for an out of form Trevoh Chalobah instead. Unfotunately, if he wants a chance of making the England squad, he needs to play at a higher level. Whether that’s at a bigger team in France or a return to the Premier League.
A switch to West Ham could be a great option, Tuchel consistently picks Jarrod Bowen, so he knows an England call-up is possible for the Hammers. The move would also be ideal for the Hammers who would be getting a dominant leader for a decent price, expected around £15m.
