West Ham United wasted a huge chance to beat Liverpool at the London Stadium, eventually slumping to a weary 2-0 defeat.
Hammers fans come into this game full of confidence, we were in good form and Liverpool were in woeful form.
To be honest, the latter continued throughout the 90 minutes in East London. Liverpool were again very poor, but Nuno Espírito Santo’s side couldn’t take advantages
In the first half I thought we were okay. They made a couple of good chances, we didn’t really have any clear cut opportunities, but we looked dangerous. Callum Wilson and Mateus Fernandes especially looked really promising.
But the Reds were there to be got at. We all hoped that after a decent first half we’d come out better and more positive in the second. Especially after what happened last weekend in Bournemouth.
Unlike the game on the south coast, thankfully Nuno didn’t make any changes. We didn’t completely sit back like we did against the Cherries, but we just continued to play with no real drive and desire.
Even though Liverpool have been so poor as of late, there’s only so long we can play like that without being punished and we did on the hour mark by Alexander Isak. The Swede scored just his second goal for the club, and first in the Premier League after arriving for £125m. Of course he had to break his duck against the Hammers.
After that, Liverpool sat back more and soaked up what was very little pressure. We had nothing on the bench that could change the game, everyone in the stadium knew we wasn’t going to score.
After 25 minutes of slow play, lacking creativity we did start to put the pressure on in the last 5, but it was too late.
A poor Liverpool side took all three points in East London. A more attacking side would have got at least a point today, but with Nuno’s style of football there’s going to frustrating games, and games you win unexpectedly. Today, even though it was against the champions, it was one of the frustrating ones.
