West Ham fans have rightly been focusing on the negatives of losing to Liverpool, but Mateus Fernandes was a shining light.

There is a lot for West Ham fans to moan about after watching their team lose 2-0 to a poor Liverpool side.

The fact we wasted a winnable game, Lucas Paquetá’s discipline, Bowen’s poor captain display and just the lack of drive from a lot of players.

But one thing one West Ham fan won’t be baling for the defeat is the performance of Matheus Fernandes. The Portugal U21 captain was absolutely terrific out there for the Hammers this afternoon.

Not only did he create the most chances out of everyone on the pitch – out performing the likes of Florian Wirtz and Lucas Paquetá. He was also key defensively making seven defensive contributions.

This is now 4/5 games in a row Matty has really impressed in, alongside Potts, they have a really good pairing going and hopefully it can last all season.

To think how much our midfield was struggling a couple of months ago to now, yes we were poor but it’s hard to blame the midfield for that. Magassa, Potts and Fernandes all played well but the latter was the one that oozed quality and passion, things a lot of the team was missing.
