Nuno Espirito Santo credited his side and the travelling support after the Hammers came from behind to pick up an important point away at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
It was a well organised and disciplined first half showing from the Hammers against the Red Devils. After the break, West Ham found themselves under the cosh, particularly in the early stages of the second half.
Just before the hour mark, United took the lead after a loose ball fell kindly to Diogo Dalot who finished past Alphonse Areola to make it 1-0. The Hammers refused to let their heads drop and were eventually rewarded, scoring a deserved equaliser in the 83rd minute.
Andy Irving delivered a dangerous corner which was glanced across goal by Jarrod Bowen. Mazraoui’s block on the line pushed the ball into the path of Songoutou Magassa who reacted quickest to fire home and bring the Hammers level.
The goal was no less than the Frenchman deserved after an exceptional performance. Speaking after the game, Hammers boss Nuno Espirito Santo praised his team’s effort and attitude against United, emphasising the need to carry that same commitment and quality into the upcoming fixtures.
“It was a very good performance, knowing that Old Trafford is always difficult. I think the boys overall in the whole game competed really well. We reacted from (conceding) a goal that came in a strange way, but the reaction was really, really positive.” said Nuno to the clubs Official Website.
He also highlighted his players’ mentality without the ball, noting the relentless work they put in to keep United at bay. “Everybody kept running, everybody kept believing, kept working hard against a very good team of Manchester United full of talented players, really difficult to contain, and that required a lot of concentration.” added the Hammers boss.
With games coming thick and fast over the coming weeks, Nuno outlined the core values he expects his squad to uphold. “The organisation, the team spirit, the belief, the commitment, the hard work – those are the basics for us to try and go out of this situation, knowing that it’s hard with the urgency of everything that we need.”
