After a long wait for an opportunity, Argentine international Guido Rodriguez was handed his first start in Claret and Blue since August in the Hammers recent draw away to Brighton.

Minutes have been hard to come by for the 31 year old so far this season, however, Rodriguez took his chance at the Amex Stadium with a positive display in the middle of the park as the Hammers secured a point on the road.

With a number of home games coming up in what will be a busy festive period for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, the experienced midfielder is well aware of the importance of maintaining momentum as the Hammers look to climb the Premier League table.

“These last games of the year are very important. These Christmas periods we know that we have to add (points) to be able to get up the table and achieve the expectations that the team wants.” said Rodriguez.

The World Cup winner discussed the importance of staying ready for when opportunities come, highlighting the work he puts in behind the scenes to ensure his is prepared for when he’s called upon. “You always have to be prepared for when the opportunities come. I think this game was nice to have the opportunity to play. I think I was up to it because every day of the week I train hard to be ready for that opportunity.” Rodriguez told the Club’s official website.

West Ham’s current midfield has plenty of options. Competition for places is high, Rodriguez has full respect for his fellow midfielders but admitted his own determination to push for more minutes. “I will continue to train and add to the team, but of course I would like to play. There are a lot of great players in general, and in midfield there are also guys who are doing very well, so I also support them.”
