Rumours are circulating about the future of West Ham’s George Earthy.
The 21-year-old has been linked with a move away from London Stadium in the upcoming January transfer window, with Bristol City — where he spent last season on loan — reportedly keen on bringing him back to Ashton Gate.
Earthy has struggled for game time since returning in the summer, with his season disrupted by injury.
While he has appeared on the first-team bench a handful of times under Nuno Espírito Santo, he is yet to make a senior appearance this campaign.
The academy product impressed during his loan spell at Bristol City last season, with many Robins fans hoping he would remain beyond the end of the campaign.
When fit, he has also been a key figure for West Ham’s youth side, scoring the winner against Colchester to send the young Irons into the EFL Trophy round of 16.
Despite Nuno handing debuts to Freddie Potts, Mohamadou Kanté and Ezra Mayers this season, a first-team opportunity has still eluded Earthy.
As a result — like teenager Luis Guilherme — he has been linked with a move away. But letting him go would be a mistake.
Earthy is among the most talented young prospects West Ham have produced in recent years. His movement, vision and finishing could all add much-needed end product to a Hammers side that has often lacked it this season.
While his injury record may be a concern, Nuno would be wise to retain him and look to integrate him into the senior squad before the season ends.
With Lucas Paquetá’s future perpetually uncertain, Earthy could become a valuable understudy — or even present the manager with a genuine selection dilemma next season should the Brazilian depart.
Earthy is a hugely gifted young footballer, and he has already scored in one of his three brief Premier League appearances. Selling him now, likely for a modest fee, would be a nonsensical decision.
