Summerville was one of a few forwards who had a poor performance against Fulham, and his lack of clinical ability proved to be costly.
Across the 60 or so minutes he was on the pitch for, Summerville didn’t have much action and come the end of his stint, fans’ opinions went hand in hand with the stats as he made a mere 17 passes, only two of which were into the final third, and he created just one chance across the majority of the game… it simply isn’t Premier League standard, and it certainly wasn’t the correct decision to start the Dutchman, given that his replacement in Callum Wilson, got himself into a position to have more chances than he did, in just 30 minutes!
Furthermore, Summerville hasn’t been performing up to the standard that many expected him to have across the past couple of games, it wasn’t just this evening, it’s one of the many reasons as to why the Hammers are currently looking at Adama Traore, as whilst neither have ideal clinical ability, it’s appearing that Traore could have more to offer than the Dutchman.
His wrong choices appeared prominent and often resulted in gifting Fulham the ball, or a counterattack that led to us losing momentum and, most obviously, ruining a chance which could’ve been so decisive for not just the result, but this entire season.
I personally think this game summarised the ongoing situation we have. We’ve ever so slightly improved in our defence, our midfield is the standout, and in the attack, we’ve become nothing but dire and Summerville is a significant part of it, hence why we seriously need to look at attacking alternatives.
Poor positioning, poor clinical ability and overall and extremely lacklustre performance. No Hammers fan wants to see that in an attacker and it certainly isn’t something that will help an already struggling side escape the claws of relegation, which has remained at being 5 points away after both us and Nottingham Forest failed to achieve anything today.
It’s all just waiting now to see what happens next week, but we’ll find out in three days if Summerville’s lacklustre efforts will still be rewarded with a starting position in the team.
