The Hammers were held against Brighton after what initially seemed as an opportunity to get three points, snatched away through schoolboy errors.
Maximilian Kilman has once again proved why he shouldn’t be in the starting squad any longer and might be remembered as one of the worst defenders to play for West Ham United ever, given the price we paid for him. It’s utterly bizarre to think we paid £40 million for a player who makes too many errors to be considered Premier League standard.
Today against Brighton, Kilman gave away what can only be described as a comical penalty after slicing through the Brighton play and gifted them a penalty, which was the equaliser and subsequently brought Brighton back into a game that they had been run out of through Nuno’s successful tactics in the first half and all was going well.
Numerous fans are quick to blame Nuno for a substitution or a tactic, but tonight, we were let down by individual quality and were lucky to not lose 3-2 from those mistakes. Being ahead of the game and at the top level controlling an opposition is where all Premier League sides would aspire for, and persistently, we are finding ourselves in these positions and throwing them away to our opponents through Rookie errors! It can’t keep happening.
Presuming that Jean-Clair Todibo doesn’t have a severe injury, Maximilian Kilman needs to be dropped from the starting squad for Mavropanos. Nuno was quick to drop the Greek international to the bench after his own-goal against Aston Villa, now, we have seen a mistake far worse and one that needs punishment because he cannot keep getting away with it.
Let us not forget that Max Kilman also gave away a penalty against Bournemouth, which led them back into the game and secured a draw, and a repeat of that has happened tonight, a month later.
The Hammers simply cannot afford these mistakes and it is one of the many reasons why fans are crying out for defensive reinforcements in January, because it’s moments like these that emphasise the anticipated woes that we inevitably struggle with every Premier League match.
