West Ham are making moves early in the January transfer window, but are we overspending?

West Ham fans are excited and mainly relieved that the owners are spending money in what is a crucial transfer window for us. Not only that, we’re making moves early.

It’s only the second of January and three signing are close: Adama Traore of Fulham, Pablo of Gil Vicente and Taty Castellanos of Lazio.

It remains to be seen how much the Traore deal is going to cost, but the phrase ‘too much’ would be appropriate here.

The Spaniard has 6 months left on his deal and Fulham are open to letting him go. I’ve seen reports that the West Londoners want £7m for him, but I don’t think that’s the case. I don’t think it will cost over anything over £3.5m to move him across London. In fact, it could even be a free transfer.

However, it’s the two strikers that almost every single West Ham fan believes were going to be paying over the odds for.

The first being Gil Vicente’s 21-year-old striker Pablo. The Hammers have reportedly had a €23m bid accepted for the player.

Pablo has a lot of traits to make him a star in the Premier League; he’s shown he’s an excellent finisher, good in the air, fast and has a physical presence.

He’s also been in excellent form this season scoring 10 goals in 14 matches. Gil Vicente are on for their best season in years and Pablo’s goals have been the biggest reason for that. He averages a goal every 97 minutes in the League this season.

This all sounds excellent, and he could turn out to be just that. However, 20 million pounds for someone with one good season in a decent league is a huge risk in the situation we’re in.

What would make it less of a risk is if we were making another marquee striker signing with a bit more Premier League or top level experience.

However, that isn’t that case. Signing Taty Castellanos is potentially even more of a risk. This time for €29m, the Hammers are signing a 27-year-old who hasn’t really proved he can consistently score goals in a top league, a striker who suits playing in a front two better and has scored just two goals this season.

He’s undoubtedly a good player, a player that could link up well with Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paquetá, and get a couple goals as well. However, I don’t see why we wouldn’t just pay the extra 10-15m to sign Jorgen Strand-Larsen from Wolves. He’s proven he can score goals in this league.

However, despite the overspend on the two strikers were bringing in three players Nuno really wants at the club, players he believes can help the team out of this predicament. So, let’s back the team, back Nuno and fight our way to safety.
