West Ham slumped to a humiliating 3-0 defeat away at Wolves on Saturday.

The result was Wolves’ first win in 20 league games this season and the Hammers 12th league loss this campaign.

Nuno Espírito Santo had a horror start against his former side. After just four minutes, Jhon Arias opened the scoring for the hosts, as Wolves played through the Hammers with ease.

Crysencio Summerville could’ve won a penalty for the visitors on 16 minutes after some clumsy defending by Yerson Mosquera, but after a VAR check, no spot-kick was given.

However, minutes later it was Wolves who were awarded a penalty when Soungoutou Magassa commited a foul inside the Hammers’ box. Hwang Hee-Chan converted to double the hosts’ lead.

Things then went from bad to worse for the Irons on 41 minutes when Mateus Mané’s strike made it 3-0 to the hosts going into half-time.

Tomáš Souček and Ezra Mayers came on for Freddie Potts and Magassa at the interval, but little changed for the Hammers, who looked hapless in posession against a Wolves side that didn’t need to get out of first gear.

West Ham had yet another penalty shout when Souček was taken down from a corner – a challenge that looked identical to the one that Lucas Paquetá was penalised for against Brighton – but once again, no penalty was awarded.

In a game where West Ham were dreadful, the officiating was no better as Wolves consistently fouled Hammers players without being penalised.

In the last ten minutes, Crysencio Summerville was wiped out by Jackson Tchatchoua. The Cameroon international could’ve easily seen red for the challenge but remained on the pitch.

However, the officiating was no excuse for the West Ham performance, which was arguably one of their worst Premier League displays of all time. There wasn’t a single West Ham player on the pitch today that looked Premier League quality.

West Ham made one of the league’s worst ever sides look solid – not just solid, but far superior. So much so, that “olés” rang around Molineux in stoppage time as the hosts ran rings around the Irons.

This is a truly dark time to be a West Ham fan. After today’s result, many supporters will call for Nuno’s departure, and I don’t blame them. But at this point, it’s difficult to see anyone getting anything out of this set of players, who look thoroughly disinterested in Claret & Blue.

It’s difficult to see West Ham staying up this season. Even if Nuno’s side bounce back to beat Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, this team lacks the mentality needed to secure top-flight survival.

It’s going to be a long second half of the season for the West Ham faithful.
