The Hammers are winless in 10, which has obviously seen other sides get further away, but it’s only so long luck can be relied on for.
West Ham’s luck regarding fixtures could’ve been worse last night, fortunately, due to Newcastle’s last-minute victory against ‘relegation rivals’ Leeds as well as Manchester United rescuing a point, we’ve somehow remained within touching distance of the pack, if you could call it that.
However, whilst the results could’ve been worse, the fact that this article has to be written suggests it all, we’ve gone from being European Champions to hoping, with the utmost respect, that Burnley and Leeds lose! Certainly a fall from grace.
But the bigger problem with this is the way in which these teams are losing matches, the fight that they put up whilst losing is incomparable to our own. All of the surrounding teams seem to be so much better than us, in every way possible, it’s utterly bizarre.
They’ve got much more fight about them, they’ve got leaders, a connected fanbase, and they have the foundations as a squad to keep wanting to go forward. West Ham? We have none of what is mentioned. We don’t even have a home!
It’s all well and good to rely on your luck whilst ahead, but whilst you’re down, the only way to catch up is by winning matches, which we seem unable to achieve in any given situation at the moment, that moment lasting from November 9th until now… we haven’t won a game in 61 days.
Burnley are now only one point behind us, and it makes you question whether we are even fighting for safety or if we are fighting to not finish last. It’s a dreaded feeling, and one side of the coin suggests we’re finishing 20th, whereas the other poses the fact that 17 fixtures are remaining, 51 points to be achieved.
Even whilst attempting to have a positive outlook, if you study the upcoming set of fixtures, the ones that have just been were our best bet at catching the field, now it’s all down to our fortune, Spurs, Sunderland and Chelsea are the next three. In reality, we need 6 points from 9, but I’ll be damned if we were even achieve a single win.
Tides need to turn, reinforcements need to be brought, and mentality has to arise. Luck can only be relied upon for so long, other teams will inevitably pick up points, and it’ll leave West Ham in the dumps. We’re down at the moment, but somehow, still not out.
