West Ham defeated QPR 2-1 in the FA Cup Third Round on Sunday to secure their first win in all competitions since November. Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville was a huge part of it.

It wasn’t a pretty game for the Irons, who were forced into extra-time by The Championship side, but ultimately they came through to put their name in the hat for Round Four.

Among the other positives for Nuno Espírito Santo’s side were the positive performances from a number of West Ham players.

New signings Taty Castellanos and Pablo both impressed, with Castellanos even netting the winning goal in the tie, opening his account in East London.

However, if there was one Hammer deserving of plaudits today, it was Crysencio Summerville, who grabbed a goal and an assist at London Stadium.

Summerville, like many of the current West Ham squad, has had a tough experience in East London since his 2024 move. It was hoped that, following a long-term injury last season, he would really kick on this campaign.

Unfortunately, that has so far failed to materialise, as the Dutchman has not scored in the Premier League for the Irons this season, and despite looking a threat, he has consistently lacked end product.

However, the 24-year-old was the difference maker for the Irons in the cup clash, scoring his first goal of the season to put the Hammers ahead, then assisting Castellanos to seal victory for Nuno’s side.

The winger was a constant threat against the Hoops, and could’ve had multiple goals were it not for the heroics of QPR goalkeeper Joe Walsh.

Some fans online joked that Summerville had ‘found his level’ against the Championship side – some have questioned his ability to be an effective top-flight player – but the winger was worth more than just his output against this round’s opponents.

Summerville looks more prolific in front of goal than he had previously. Even against Forest, despite the fact his crucial strike was ruled out by VAR, the finish showed more conviction than he has generally displayed this season.

Summerville has been criticised for lacking edge in front of goal this season. But in recent games, he has looked much more confident when chances have presented themselves.

Additionally, it was encouraging to see a tricky Summerville run – which began with an exquisite turn – provide an assist for new signing Castellanos. So often this season, the Dutchman has performed impressive mazy runs without making any real impact – today, he showed that he can supply as well as entertain.

Of course, this impressive performance came against a second-tier team and Summerville must begin to prove his worth in the Premier League if West Ham are to stay up. But hopefully, these recent games are a sign that his confidence is growing and that he can improve his attacking output before the season ends.
