West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo has brought in two new strikers worth a combined £50m, but his use of them is confusing.
The first of the two new signings Pablo Felipe is yet to start a game for the Hammers, and is yet to really show anything off the bench.
The second, who followed just a couple of days later, Taty Castellanos, has started twice, and is already off the mark as a Hammer, scoring the winner against Queens Park Rangers yesterday afternoon.
Despite everyone saying he’s better in a front two, Taty has started both games as a lone striker. However, it’s clear he looks a lot better when he’s got more bodies around him. But, with our defensive frailties, it’s understandable as to why Nuno starts him up there on his own.
As for Pablo, Nuno’s use of him so far has been extremely confusing. When he comes on and both him and Castellanos are in attack, it’s like he uses them the wrong way round.
It’s similar to when he swapped the full backs, when he played Scarles on the right and KWP/AWB on the left. It clearly wasn’t working and he stuck with it for back to back games, we ended up losing two winnable fixtures.
Now he’s tried it twice and it hasn’t really worked, let’s hope the Portuguese manager stops it in the next match.
Taty Castellanos is the player than should be dropping deep, coming wide to pick up the ball and almost playing as a number ten, or false nine whatever you want to call it.
However, when Pablo has come on, he’s been playing that role, and while I don’t think he’s been awful, he’s linked up play well and times and win a free-kicks, there is times where he’s falling all over the place looking like a bill in a china shop.
I don’t know much about Pablo, but I do know a bit about Castellanos, and I know he should be the one trying to link up with the other attackers and create chances and Pablo should be the one trying to get the ball in the back of the net
I would love to see them both start against Tottenham next weekend, especially now it looks like Paquetá will be leaving, but only if Nuno plays them the right way round.
