West Ham have been linked with a move for former Spurs defender Eric Dier and it could be a seriously smart move should we pull it off.
Firstly I admit I was underwhelmed by this. In fact, I felt deflated, in that we were looking at a guy who is way past his best at 31, plus of course being a player who spent most of his career at Spurs.
However, those feelings soon changed after some thought, with it becoming clear that Diers leadership and personality, as well as his experience could be exactly what our fragile team needs.
West Ham are a side seriously lacking character. It seems we have been hellbent on letting go of any player with any kind of leadership qualities, which many can see is now a huge issue as we scramble to survive.
The chances of us beating the drop this season feel a long shot, which is so sad to see. However, this January transfer window could be the turning point, if we get it right.
Eric Dier is nobody’s top choice realistically, but lets be honest, he’s better than what we have. He’s a fighter, holds many years of experience at the top level, England international, multilingual – but more important than all of that, he’s a leader.
A player too that holds a strong relationship with Nuno, which could see the others fall in line behind Dier, should he decide his calling is to come to east London and drive our survival push.
It’s a long shot, but there is a feeling growing that this could be such a huge move and one that could well pay off.
