West Ham striker Callum Wilson still hasn’t been let go by the club, but he also isn’t making the squad. What are the club doing?
The QPR match on Sunday marked the second match Callum Wilson wasn’t involved, despite being injury free and fit to play.
It became common knowledge that Callum Wilson wanted out of the club after we confirmed the signings of Taty Castellanos and Pablo Felipe.
He was frustrated with the number of games he was getting without them, we didn’t even have a striker, Nuno was playing Paquetá up front instead of him for some reason. So, his minutes would surely be more limited behind the two new boys.
Not only would he not be playing much, he also wouldn’t be earning much. As most Hammers fans know, Wilson is on a pay as you play deal. His contract is heavily incentivised, he earns a guaranteed weekly wage which is expected to be around 20k, but every time he plays and every time he scores, his wage is boosted.
So, if he’s barely playing, or not playing at all he’s only going to be earning that fee of around 20k a week. So, it’s understandable why he wants to go.
But what isn’t understandable is why we’ve completely frozen him out. He’s scored 4 goals for us this season, it’s not like he’s almost useless like Füllkrug was, he could make a difference off the bench.
I don’t think Wilson is the type of player to refuse to play, yes he’s in talks to leave, but we need everything we can get right now. And not including a proven Premier League goalscorer in the match day squad is crazy to me.
It’s unlikely we’re going to see him in claret and blue again as Wilson continues to search for another club, but the Hammers have dealt with this situation badly and that comes to no surprise.
