West Ham United midfielder Andy Irving is set to leave the club, and it is now rumoured that he will move to the Championship after his move to Wrexham fell through during the summer.
The Scottish midfielder ultimately ended up becoming a cult hero after he started making first team apperaecnes for the squad despite never receiving an official announcement from the club that he had signed. Andy Irving was initially signed for £500k from SK Austria Klagenfurt, where the fee was supposed to mark an agreement between the clubs. The Hammers were to send them players on loan, and they’d develop them for us. However, this idealistic view didn’t become apparent.
Since then, Andy Irving has gone on to play 7 matches for West Ham and the truth is, he simply isn’t good enough for the Premier League and as to why his name was mentioned so much, it was only due to the ongoing joke that people made about him and for a shortwhile, became a cult hero but after a handful of poor perfomances, that comments settled down and majority of fans acknowledged he wasn’t good enough and had to be sold.
It’s unknown how much Wrexham were planning to pay in the summer for the Scotsman, but it was expected to be around £2 million, therefore, you’d assume that the Norwich fee will be around a similar price tag if the deal were to go through, it’s just a matter of personal terms which is what prevented the move to Wrexham from happening as Irving was happier to maintain the wage he recives at the Hammers.
A player that has a bit of quality about him, but in honesty, he isn’t anywhere near good enough, and the majority of our younger midfield youth prospects have a higher ceiling than him, so I don’t believe in the future we’ll come to regret selling the 25 year old.
He’s a midfielder that we’ll manage to accumulate a small fee for, and he’ll also be a name off the wage bill, where he’s rumoured to be earning around £800k – £1 million annually.
