West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville has been linked with a move to London rivals Spurs this month.
The 24-year-old has scored in back-to-back games for Nuno Espírito Santo’s side and has reportedly caught the eye of Thomas Frank.
The Dutchman has really improved his game over the last couple of weeks and was electric against Spurs in North London last weekend, opening the scoring and proving a real threat in attack.
But typically, just as the winger is finding form at London Stadium, he is being linked with a departure – to the Hammers’ London rivals no less.
According to reports, Spurs are ‘preparing’ a £25 million move for Summerville, who they see as a potential successor to Son Heung-Min, a Spurs legend who left for the MLS last summer after a decade in North London.
West Ham have already sold one winger to Spurs in the last twelve months – Mohammed Kudus for £55 million back in the summer. But with the Ghanaian set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Frank’s side could make a move for another West Ham wide man.
However, despite the reports, I believe the move is unlikely to happen – during the current transfer window at least.
Given Spurs’ current injury crisis and how well Summerville played against them last weekend, it’s no surprise that the player has been linked with the club.
Spurs have also been interested in other West Ham attackers in recent history. A few months ago, the Irons’ skipper Jarrod Bowen was linked with a shock move to North London, but ultimately, nothing came of it.
I believe the Summerville rumours will meet a similar conclusion. Amid their current relegation dogfight, it would be ludicrous for the Hammers to sell a key player that appears settled in Stratford – especially to a rival like Spurs.
However, it is not a complete impossibilty, as David Sullivan seems adamant on stripping the club asset-by-asset. Despite signing two attackers this window, West Ham have also let go of three first-team players, further depleting an already shallow squad.
It looks like Crysencio Summerville will play a key role in the Hammers’ Premier League survival attempt this season. Although a move can’t be completely ruled out, hopefully common sense will prevail in East London, and the Dutchman will be retained, as the Hammers look to secure safety this season.
