West Ham face Sunderland in the early game on Saturday as they aim to maintain their recent winning streak.
Yes, you heard me: winning streak. Even if it has only been two games against a Championship side and one of the worst Spurs teams in recent history, the Hammers have built up some momentum after a torrid run over the last two months.
Tomorrow’s opponents are Sunderland, who are having an amazing season – probably the best of any newly-promoted team in recent years. The Black Cats sit 9th in the table, and a win in East London could lift them into the European places.
Their excellent campaign got off to the perfect start when they beat the Hammers 3-0 on opening day, a game which really set the tone for both sides this season.
However, despite how well they have played, Sunderland’s momentum has slowed down in recent games. Régis Le Bris’ team have won only one of their last six league games and were winless in five before their win against Crystal Palace last weekend.
Though admittedly, the Black Cats picked up valuable points against Manchester City and Spurs during that run, and West Ham will probably be the weakest side they have faced since the turn of the year.
Sunderland have been excellent defensively this season, conceding only 23 goals in 22 games – as opposed to the 44 that Nuno Espírito Santo’s side have shipped. But they have only scored 23 goals this campaign, one less than the often toothless Irons.
The success of Le Bris’ side has been built on a resolute defence and tenacious midfield. Granit Xhaka has proven to be one of the signings of the summer, and it will be interesting to see how he fares against West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who has been a shining light in an often troubled Hammers side.
Despite Sunderland’s quality, their style of play could give the Hammers a great opportunity to record a first clean sheet under Nuno – ironically, Le Bris’ side are very similar in approach to Nuno’s Wolves team from years ago.
El Hadji Malick Diouf is back for the Irons following his AFCON triumph with Senegal, although he has only had one training session and Ollie Scarles should start at London Stadium. In fact, the team should remain unchanged as a reward for their efforts against Spurs.
Lucas Paquetá is not expected to be in the squad tomorrow, as his departure from West Ham looks imminent. Pablo Felipe has recently impressed in his absence.
Saturday provides the Hammers with the opportunity to right their wrongs of the opening day and capitalise on new-found momentum. Here’s hoping the lads show up and put in a good performance to claw closer to safety.
Kick off is at 12.30pm at London Stadium.
