West Ham secured a huge three points with a 1–0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night.
The winning goal came from Crysencio Summerville, who scored his seventh goal of 2026, capitalising on Bernd Leno’s error.
Despite the goalkeeping howler, the winger took his goal superbly, deftly dropping his shoulder to find a yard of space to finish past the Fulham defenders.
However, though West Ham’s goal was of great quality, it was their defensive solidity that earned them the result.
The Irons kept their fourth Premier League clean sheet of the season, and their third in their last five games.
Mads Hermansen in goal made some crucial saves, and the centre-back pairing of Axel Disasi and Jean-Clair Todibo proved too much for Marco Silva’s side.
However, another player who stood out was substitute Soungoutou Magassa. The 22-year-old midfielder was excellent in his 30-minute cameo — forty minutes, really, considering the lengthy injury time the Irons endured.
The Frenchman solidified the Hammers’ midfield. Magassa added another physical presence to aid Tomáš Souček and Mateus Fernandes, nullifying the threat of Fulham’s Alex Iwobi.
Magassa also had 100% passing accuracy in the game, which was crucial for the Hammers once they took the lead.
He only lost possession once and looked solid throughout the closing stages of the game. Even that mistake came on the halfway line after an outstanding challenge he made in the West Ham box.
Questions have been asked of the young midfielder during the season. At times, he has looked a strong, promising young talent.
However, Magassa has also had his share of poor outings, none more noticeable than his shocking performance in the 3–0 loss at Wolves in January.
But the former Monaco man has also put in some crucial displays this season, and Wednesday’s cameo was among his best.
Freddie Potts will be back in the squad next week following suspension. It will be interesting to see who Nuno Espírito Santo chooses to play in the Hammers’ midfield in their FA Cup clash with Brentford on Monday night.
But Magassa gave an impressive account of himself at Craven Cottage and the decision to bring him on played a huge part in a huge victory for the Irons.
