West Ham legend Paolo Di Canio has offered some transfer advice to Hammers boss Nuno Espírito Santo before the summer window.
Di Canio, who scored 50 goals in 139 appearances for the Irons, has suggested that West Ham reinforce their attacking options in the summer. The recent signings of Pablo, Taty Castellanos and Adama Traoré have bolstered the Irons’ attack, but the Italian believes that another striker could be a good fit for the Hammers.
The striker in question is Dušan Vlahović of Juventus. The 26-year-old Serbian international has scored six goals in seventeen appearances across Serie A and the Champions League this season.
After impressing with Fiorentina in the 2021/22 season, Vlahović attracted interest from many of Europe’s top clubs. Arsenal were heavily rumoured to sign the striker before Juventus eventually secured his signature for a fee of just over £66 million.
Since the move, the Serb has scored 64 goals in 162 appearances for one of Italy’s top sides. He has also become a key player for his country, picking up 41 caps and scoring 16 goals.
However, he has been linked with a move away from Turin in the summer, and Di Canio believes the London Stadium could be a suitable destination for the forward. “With the salary Vlahović has, who will take him? West Ham easily pays €6 million, no problem,” he recently remarked.
Vlahović could be an excellent signing for the Irons were they to stay up this season. He has great pedigree, and at 26 he is still in his prime. However, West Ham still need to secure Premier League safety this season, and they have a harrowing history when it comes to signing big-money strikers.
Additionally, recent reports regarding the Irons’ finances do not look promising. According to rumours, West Ham may not be able to spend big in the summer. And even if they avoid relegation, they may have to sell some of their top assets anyway.
West Ham need to be shrewd in the summer window. Centre-back Axel Disasi has recently expressed interest in staying at West Ham beyond this season if the Irons secure safety. If Nuno’s side manage to avoid the drop this season, they will need to prioritise retaining proven players over taking big-money gambles.
