West Ham grabbed a huge 1-1 draw against Man City on Saturday night to climb out of the relegation zone for the first time in 2026.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s side were under pressure in the opening exchanges of the game as City dominated possession. City boss Pep Guardiola was banned from the sidelines for this game. Eagle-eyed viewers of TNT’s coverage would have spotted that he was corresponding with his coaches from the stands.
Rodri and Bernardo Silva were controlling the game for Guardiola’s team, as West Ham only managed nine passes in the first ten minutes of the tie.
However, as the half went on, the Irons grew into the game. Jarrod Bowen, Taty Castellanos and Pablo were linking up well, with El Hadji Malick Diouf causing Pep’s side some headaches on the left.
But then, on 31 minutes, the visitors’ pressure paid off as City opened the scoring. Bernardo Silva picked up the ball just inside the Hammers’ box, chipping Mads Hermansen from the left-hand side of the penalty area.
Considering Silva likely didn’t even mean to score, the goal was a frustrating one for Nuno’s side to concede. But they responded well, and within minutes they were level.
From the Irons’ first (and only) corner of the game, Jarrod Bowen’s cross flew over Gianluigi Donnarumma in the City goal and onto the head of Konstantinos Mavropanos. The Greek headed the ball off the crossbar and in to level the tie.
After scoring, the Irons’ confidence grew, with Nuno’s side pinning City back on a few occasions. Despite that, the best chance before half-time fell to City’s Antoine Semenyo, who was teed up by Erling Haaland after Aaron Wan-Bissaka lost possession. The Ghanaian’s effort fizzed just wide as the sides went into half-time all square.
The second half was a hugely tense 45 minutes of football. Erling Haaland went close to scoring his 12th goal against the Irons when he was played in behind the West Ham defence. But a combination of Mavropanos and Hermansen denied the Norwegian.
In fact, Mavropanos was a colossus for the Hammers tonight. He truly embodied the newfound character of this West Ham side, constantly putting his body on the line for the team.
Man City made changes throughout the half, introducing Phil Foden, Jérémy Doku, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki. The Frenchman in particular was causing problems for the hosts with his quick feet and precise distribution. Reijnders went close after Hermansen tipped his free-kick onto the crossbar as the Irons did everything they could to keep their opponents out.
But still, the visitors couldn’t find that second goal. West Ham have often been labelled a side that are vulnerable from corners this season. Man City had 15 tonight and didn’t score from any of them.
City’s best chance from a corner was their last chance of the game. Mavropanos made yet another big block from Nico O’Reilly before the ball fell to Marc Guéhi. The former Crystal Palace man blazed over from close range as Nuno’s side breathed a huge sigh of relief.
After what felt like an eternity of stoppage time, the final whistle blew as West Ham secured a massive point against the eight-time Premier League champions.
In a run full of commendable performances from Nuno’s side, this may have just been the best. Man City weren’t in top gear but have more than enough quality to comfortably win any game.
Likewise, Mavropanos has put in some wonderful displays recently, but tonight was his best-ever outing in a West Ham shirt. The Greek deservedly won the Man of the Match award.
An excellent point that propels the Hammers out of the bottom three. Their relegation rivals still have to play on Sunday, but the Irons are doing everything they can to remain in the Premier League next season.
What a result! COME ON YOU IRONS!
