West Ham face Manchester City in the Premier League tonight. The Hammers are in good form, but haven’t beaten tonight’s opponents at home in over a decade.
In the Premier League at least – the Irons defeated City on penalties in the League Cup in 2021 – but they are without a league win against the Manchester club since Pep Guardiola took over in 2016.
In fact, you would have to go back as far as the days of Upton Park to find the last time West Ham beat City at home.
In October 2014, the Irons defeated Manuel Pellegrini’s City side 2-1 at the Boleyn Ground. Diafra Sakho and Morgan Amalfitano scored the goals for Sam Allardyce’s side to put the Irons 2-0 up. David Silva snatched a goal back for the visitors, but the Hammers held out, even under intense pressure from their opponents.
The result was huge for a West Ham side that had started the 2014/15 campaign quite well, recording wins over Liverpool, Crystal Palace, QPR and Burnley to secure 13 points from their first eight games.
New signing Sakho was in electric form upon his arrival from French side Metz, and his goal ultimately proved the winner – the last winning goal West Ham have scored at home against Manchester City.
The final meeting between the sides at Upton Park ended in a 2–2 draw, with Enner Valencia and Sergio Agüero both scoring braces. Fortunes have rarely favoured the Irons in their encounters since.
David Moyes’ Hammers secured impressive results against Guardiola’s side during the Scot’s tenure. In 2020, an excellent Michail Antonio bicycle kick earned a 1-1 draw against the eventual champions of the lockdown league campaign.
Likewise, in Mark Noble’s final home game, a Jarrod Bowen brace and a heroic Łukasz Fabiański penalty save grabbed a point for the Irons towards the end of the 2021/22 season.
West Ham have never secured a league win over Manchester City at the London Stadium, but all things come to an end eventually. Given the Irons’ current momentum and City’s busy schedule, they may not have a better chance to break that streak. Like most Hammers fans, I’m not expecting us to pick up a result tonight. But if previous relegation scraps have proven anything, it’s that anything can happen during the run-in.
