West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen continues his impressive return to form with a near player of the match display vs Manchester City.
If it wasn’t for the colossal performance of Konstantinos Mavropanos on Saturday, my man of the match would have been the Danish stopper.
After an absolute stinker of a start to the season under Graham Potter, Mads Hermansen has been sensational since pulling on number one jersey back on.
It’s taken us all suprise, he didn’t look like he knew how to deal with a corner before, now he claims them without any problem. His distribution is clear of Areola’s too, he’s really helped the team since coming back in for the last six League matches.
But what is the reason for his upturn? I simply think it’s confidence, he seems like a guy that relies on his confidence and relationships.
He has built relationships with the players around him now, whether that be on the pitch or friendships off of it I’m not sure.
When Hermansen made his Hammers debut, it was on the first game of the Premier League season. He signed just a week before the start of the season, he probably only had two or three proper training sessions and was thrown straight in.
At the time I thought it was a silly decision and it proved to be, he was so bad we had to drop him because it felt like we were conceding from almost every corner and that was affecting his confidence and therefore the rest of his game.
Now he’s settled at the club, he looks 100x the goalkeeper and he’s keeping Areola out the team, and the Frenchman wasn’t exactly playing badly, Hermansen must have been impressing in training and we’re now seeing that on the pitch.
If we stay up this season, Mads Hermansen’s form in the latter half of the season would be a big part of that.
