Konstantinos Mavropanos was on Ironcast recently, speaking about West Ham’s improvement under Nuno Espírito Santo.
The Greek appeared on the Hammers’ official podcast, where he discussed different subjects with host Chris Scull and former West Ham striker Carlton Cole.
Mavropanos revealed that one of the big factors behind the team’s current form was their improvement from set-pieces – which isn’t exactly news.
Nuno’s side have become drastically more efficient from corners in both boxes. This has been especially evident over the last month, when Mavropanos scored twice from set-pieces in the Irons’ 4–0 win over Wolves.
Additionally, the Hammers kept a clean sheet against Crystal Palace in their next game. The Eagles have caused West Ham problems from set-pieces over the years, but Nuno’s side thwarted their efforts to earn a hard-fought point at Selhurst Park.
Scull and Cole praised Dinos for his aerial ability, with the latter likening the Greek’s aerial prowess to that of John Terry and James Collins. In recent months, the 28-year-old has been one of the Premier League’s most powerful forces in the air.
When asked how he has become so dominant in aerial duels, Mavropanos remarked that he now better understands the players who take set-pieces against him.
There was also a funny moment during the interview when he admitted that he “bets” on his knowledge of the opposition during games. Cole quickly shut the Greek down before he could say any more.
Mavropanos obviously meant the word “bet” figuratively, but it was interesting to see that the ghost of Lucas Paquetá’s betting scandal still lingers in East London.
Dinos, who has recently been nominated for Premier League Player of the Month, also spoke on the team’s mentality before games.
He remarked that the first thing is “to focus on us” and “our points”, a mentality that has seen the Irons creep out of the relegation zone with just four games to go.
The shift in mentality for Nuno’s side has been incredible over the last few months. Even when Everton equalised on Saturday following Spurs’ winner at Wolves, the Hammers didn’t crumble. They focused on their own game, nicking a late winner to stay two points ahead of their relegation rivals.
Mavropanos spoke very well during the interview and seemed to represent the current West Ham side: a team that is confident but assured, equipped with both knowledge of the opposition and faith in themselves.
Hopefully, this mentality will be enough to see them over the line come the end of May.
