Manchester United are in for two of West Ham United’s best players this summer as they prepare for life back in the UEFA Champions League.
When you hear the phrase ‘wonderkid’, you automatically think of the next youngster coming through at a club, not proven Premier League players.
However, there are two West Ham players that fall into both categories – El Hadji Malick Diouf and Mateus Fernandes. Two summer signings that have been class for West Ham this season, despite the club’s poor season as a whole.
Especially the latter, Fernandes, 21, has been by far and away West Ham’s best and most consistent players this season. Even though he’s playing for a poor team I don’t think he’s had one poor game this season and that says a lot.
He’s got everything you want in a midfielder. He can run, tackle, dribble, pass all to an absolutely excellent standard, he’s almost like a mini Declan Rice. Not as good, but if he stayed here a couple more years, I don’t see why he can reach a similar level to what Rice left us at.
He would be a brilliant signing for United to play alongside his namesake and countryman, Bruno Fernandes, and fellow youngster and England international Kobbie Mainoo, or whatever defensive midfielder they bring in to replace Casemiro.
That could be brilliant to watch at Old Trafford; however, let’s hope that’s not the case. Let’s hope we stay up and manage to keep him for at least another year.
However, as for Diouf, I would be a lot happier to let him go than Fernandes. The 20-year-old has undeniable talent and potential; however, his potential is nowhere near the level Fernandes could get to.
Diouf is already a pretty decent Premier League left-back; he has an excellent cross on him, from the right angle, but he can also be very sloppy and make mistakes very often. While Fernandes is already one of the Premier League’s best midfielders
Diouf would be replaceable, Fernandes wouldn’t. A price of £40-45m would get you Diouf, but we should be demanding at least double that at £80m for us to even consider an offer for Fernandes.
