West Ham want to hold on to manager Nuno Espírito Santo, even if the Hammers are relegated this season.

That is according to The Telegraph, who reported the story on X yesterday. Things look bleak for Nuno’s side following this weekend’s results. After losing 3–0 to Brentford on Saturday, the Hammers were dealt a further blow when relegation rivals Tottenham beat Aston Villa 2–1 the following night.

The result leaves the Irons in the relegation zone with three games to go. Many West Ham fans have begun accepting that their team are Championship-bound, which would surely see the departures of many of the Hammers’ key players.

However, it has now been reported that West Ham want Nuno to stay beyond this season, even if his side face the drop. It is expected that the manager himself will decide whether he carries on as the Hammers’ boss next season.

The news has divided Hammers fans, with the 52-year-old’s record in East London splitting opinions. Some supporters believe another change is needed, that Nuno has failed in his mission and that there are more suitable alternatives available. Others appreciate the job the manager has done, despite the situation West Ham find themselves in.

Personally, I hope that Nuno is our manager next season, even if it is in the Championship. He has made his mistakes, sure, but West Ham’s form in 2026 shows that he knows how to build a good footballing side with limited resources.

Critics of Nuno argue that the former Wolves and Forest boss has been in charge for most of the season and should have had enough time to turn things around. But I do not think any manager could have instantly rejuvenated a squad that had suffered the one-two punch of Julen Lopetegui and Graham Potter.

Potter especially had reduced the squad so much – in quantity, quality and mentality – that Nuno had a monumental challenge ahead of him. I think it is nothing short of a miracle that West Ham still have some chance of survival with three games to go this season. For that, Nuno must be given credit.

And even if the points on the board in 2026 do not impress you, it cannot be denied that the football Nuno has brought to the London Stadium has made fans feel more connected to the team than they have in the last two years. Additionally, these players seem very fond of the current boss and want to play for him – which could not be said about his two predecessors.

It is still not guaranteed that the Hammers will be playing second-tier football next season. But even if the worst happens, I will feel more at ease if Nuno is still at the helm.
