West Ham are looking at a number of free agents to bolster their squad for the upcoming season in the Championship.

Despite the money that Daniel Křetínský is expected to inject into the club this summer, the Irons’ relegation to England’s second tier means they will likely consider the free-agent market for signings this summer.

One potential signing is Dael Fry of Middlesbrough. The 28-year-old’s contract expires this summer, and the Hammers are reportedly one of the teams interested in his signature.

Born in Middlesborough, the English centre-back has played his football in the North East since 2014. But now he could be making the first move of his career at 28.

Fry has made 296 appearances for Boro over the years and is now the captain of Kim Hellberg’s side. But according to Middlesbrough’s retained list statement, a new contract isn’t guaranteed.

At 6ft 4in, Fry is strong in the air, but he is also a good passer of the ball. On a free transfer, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side could do worse than the Englishman, who played in the Championship play-off final last month.

To have a player with so much Championship experience would certainly benefit the Hammers, who will be playing in the second tier for the first time in 14 years.

With Axel Disasi gone and Jean-Clair Todibo highly likely to depart this summer, Nuno will need some defensive reinforcements. Fry could prove a shrewd signing, especially if the reactions of Boro supporters are to be believed.

Amid speculation over Fry’s future, Middlesbrough supporters have expressed disappointment at the club’s inability to tie up a deal for the defender thus far, a testament to his standing and a positive indication of what he could offer the Hammers.

Charlton and Sheffield United have also emerged as potential suitors for the 28-year-old, but West Ham should be seen as a more lucrative destination for Fry should he depart the Riverside Stadium this summer.
