West Ham will be dipping into the free agent market this summer. Could this Sweden World Cup star be an option?

Nuno Espirito Santo will need to dip into the market to sign a winger or two this summer, or maybe even three.

Adama Traore has already left, Crysencio Summerville is nailed on to do the same, and Jarrod Bowen could also leave despite intentions to keep him.

This would leave us with zero senior wingers at the club, so we need to sign at least one. We haven’t really been linked with one yet, but we have heard we are looking at the free agent market.

So, who is available? Well, to be honest, there aren’t many. The most high-profile one would be Harry Wilson; however, after an excellent season for Fulham, he will certainly get a Premier League move.

Allan Saint-Maximin, formerly of Newcastle, would also have been a very good option; however, he looks set to join Charlotte FC in the MLS.

Apart from those two, there aren’t really any household names. One player that stands out as a good option is Sweden international Elliot Stroud.

Currently playing at the World Cup, Stroud, who was also eligible to play for England, is leaving Swedish top-tier (Allsvenskan) side Mjällby AIF after three years on a free transfer.

In 55 appearances in the Allsvenskan, Stroud has scored 19 goals and provided 13 assists. While it’s a weak league, these are great numbers and could be the perfect Championship signing.

Stroud would offer a lot down the left side, versatility being the main thing. Not only can he play as a left midfielder/winger, but he can also play as a left wing-back, which is known as his best position to many.

This would be music to Nuno’s ears, as we know he likes to play with a back five, and we won’t really have a player that can play LWB if and when Malick Diouf leaves.

His biggest asset is his athleticism; his long strides down that left side really help him drive past players and cover ground; he also has a wand of a left foot and can deliver a great cross from both open play and corners.

Linked with Serie A side Genoa already, Stroud is likely to have a lot of interest this summer on a free, so we’d have to move fast.

This is the type of signing we need to be making in the Championship: young, hungry, versatile, cheap. However, I just can’t see us even being aware of him, which is a real shame.
