West Ham are in talks to appoint Nils Koppen as the clubs new Director of Football, it has been reported by ExWHUEmployee.

Although it was felt that Steve Nickson, who recently left Newcastle, was set for the role, it now appears that he is heading elsewhere as the club look to get the appointment for the position concluded as soon as possible.

Reporting on The West Ham Way Patreon, our insider Ex has confirmed that Koppen, who was formally at Rangers, has been approached to take on the role.

“We can confirm that reports emerging from the Football Insider website regarding approaching Nils Koppen to become the new Director of Football at West Ham are true.

“West Ham have been in talks with a number of potential candidates for the position with Steve Nickson close to taking the job previously. It now looks like the former Newcastle employee will head elsewhere so West Ham have interviewed a number of other candidates for the position.

“Koppen currently works at FC Copenhagen as a Technical Director and was previously at Rangers in Scotland. This is where the link to West Ham comes in. Karim Virani was recently appointed as the club’s interim chief executive officer and he has been responsible for making a number of decisions at the club following the change at boardroom level.

“Virani worked at Rangers from June 2023 to February 2025. He was involved in the appointment of Nils Koppen to the position of Technical Director at the Glasgow giants.

“It seems that Virani has recommended his former colleague for the position at West Ham.

“It is important to stress that this is not a done deal as yet because the 39 year old still needs to obtain a work permit as well as finalising the terms of his contract. He is a leading candidate however and its hoped he will take on the role, although the club do have others lined up.

“The club hope to get a new appointment confirmed soon so they can begin to work on the recruitment at the club with many things currently unsettled.”
