Reports are suggesting that West Ham could be loaning out Edson Alvarez to Bundesliga side 1. FC Köln.

The Mexico captain’s time at West Ham has been nothing short of a disaster. He had a good first season, but after that it all went wrong for the £35 million signing from Ajax.

After reportedly falling out with then manager Graham Potter, the 28-year-old spent last season on loan at Fenerbache and it was even worse than his time in East London, Again, he started well but then injuries scuppered the rest of his season. When he ‘returned’ later in the seasons, there were suggestions that he didn’t want to play for the Turkish giants in order to prepare for the World Cup.

While he probably isn’t as things stand, there isn’t any hope that Edson will stick around and play in the Championship, he will think he’s too good to play in the second tier, and that his reputation exceeds it.

Edson Alvarez will be leaving West Ham this summer, but we need to get the best possible deal. The latest rumours that we might be loaning him out to FC Köln, which in my opinion would be a silly decision.

He is probably worth around £15 million now after a couple of decent performances at the World Cup, and realistically, even if he has a top season in the Bundesliga his price tag isn’t going to go up much, if at all.

We need to do all we can to try to flog him permanently this summer, not give up and loan him out with almost two months left of the transfer window. After selling Fernandes for £85 million, and Summerville to follow for an extra £50-60 million, we don’t need to rush.

We need to take our time and find the best offer for Alvarez, not just take the first one possible to get rid.
