Callum Wilson has completed his move to Brentford, leaving West Ham after one season at the club.

The 34-year-old leaves the Irons after scoring seven goals in 35 appearances. Just five goals away from joining the Premier League’s 100 Club, West Ham’s relegation in May was always going to make retaining the striker difficult.

Wilson arrived at London Stadium last August, a move which was generally met with outrage from Hammers fans. The Englishman was brought in on a free transfer from Newcastle and seemingly signalled a lack of ambition from the Irons.

Additionally, his past comments belittling West Ham’s 2023 UEFA Conference League triumph also rubbed fans the wrong way.

But the West Ham faithful were soon proven wrong, as Wilson proved to be one of the best value-for-money signings in recent Hammers history.

The 34-year-old chipped in with some huge goals, including last-minute winners against Spurs and Everton. Had the Irons avoided the drop on the final day of last season, those goals would’ve gone down in Hammers history.

But unfortunately, West Ham’s 3-0 win over Leeds on the final day didn’t prove enough, as Spurs beat Everton 1-0 to stay up. Wilson scored the Irons’ last goal of the season and their last top-flight goal until at least 2027.

And what a goal it was: a venomous first-time strike from outside the penalty area that flew past Karl Darlow.

In the end, I’m disappointed to see Wilson go. He was a great character and a very good striker during his time in Stratford.

Players who usually play well against West Ham rarely replicate that form when they actually play for the Irons, but Wilson succeeded.

He may not have kept us up, but he still proved to be one of West Ham’s most prolific attackers in years. I would take him over Scamacca, Haller or Füllkrug any day of the week.

I wish him all the best on his new adventure; he deserves to reach that Premier League goalscoring milestone.

But if West Ham are promoted next season and Wilson is still playing Premier League football, I’d almost put my house on him scoring against us once again.

At least we won’t have to see him celebrate in front of us this time.
