West Ham defeated Colchester United 3-2 in a behind closed doors friendly on Tuesday at Rush Green.

One of the goalscorers was Pablo Felipe who was on target for the first time in a Hammers shirt. Also amongst the goalscorers were Hammers outcasts Niclas Füllkrug and Maxwel Cornet which really surprised fans.

Both players are on the chopping block this summer, with rumours we could let Füllkrug leave on a free, and pay Maxwel Cornet out of hos contract. Would these decisions be a mistake?

I can imagine Füllkrug doesn’t have intentions of playing in the Championship and would want to leave the club, however, I believe he could be a decent option for us.

With Callum Wilson departing the football club on a free, we need to replace his goals, Ideally we would do that with a similar profile, a player that’s a proven goalscorer in English football.

Füllkrug isn’t that, his Premier League goal record wasn’t great, and his injury record is even worse, but it could be worth the risk if he’s willing to stay and play under Nuno. What he is is a proper striker, he is a proven goalscorer albeit in the Bundesliga, he’s a target man, and provides us with a different option compared to Castellanos and Pablo.

Niclas Füllkrug could be the Callum Wilson replacement we need and he’s already at the club.

As for Maxwel Cornet, it looks like he will be leaving East London after a complete nightmare of a few years at West Ham. The fans were buzzing when the Ivorian winger signed for ‘bargain’ fee of £17,5 million after a stellar season with Burnley.

However, after 4 years of injury problems, unsuccessful loan moves and lack of opportunities, it’s likely West Ham will terminate the 29-year-old’s contract. But after a goal against Colchester on Wednesday, could Cornet work his way back into the clubs plans.

With Adama Traore already gone and Crysencio Summerville set to follow, we need to add two, if not three wingers to the squad, Maxwel Cornet is here, he is said to be good around the training ground, he’s a specialist left-winger with enough quality to perform in the Championship, and to add to that he’s also versatile. He can play as a left-wing back, even at left-back, or even at striker if we were desperate.

It does seem like both players are going to leave, which would make sense as relegation is a good time for a reset, to freshen up the squad. So, getting rid of two ageing injury prone forwards would make complete sense.

But on the other hand, we need depth, we need replacements, Fullkrug and Cornet are both good enough to be that, but the squad reset is likely to take priority over that.
