Michail Antonio is wrong to think that he deserved a better offer from West Ham, says Dave Walker.

The former Hammers forward, who departed the club as West Ham’s record Premier League goalscorer after a hugely successful spell in his career, couldn’t agree terms on a deal presented to him.

It’s understood the deal on offer was that of an Academy player, to enable Antonio to recover and prove his fitness after a near death car crash that he was lucky to survive.

Antonio rejected the deal and has stated he felt insulted, although the club did pay his full wage during his long recovery after the accident.

The comments from Antonio has irked many, with the feeling that the deal on the table was fair considering the circumstances, which is certainly felt by The West Ham Way Podcast host Dave Walker.

“I love Michail but I can’t agree with him on this,” stated Walker. “That car crash was so severe that there’s no way another Premier League team would’ve offered him a contract after that.

“At the very least we gave him rehabilitation and a token gesture amount to still be part of the club and train every day.

“If he thinks he will be offered a wage anywhere near what he had before given his age and physical condition now then I’m sorry he’s deluded.”
