Former West Ham defender Axel Disasi looks set to join Crystal Palace on loan from Chelsea.

The Frenchman became something of a cult hero during his time in East London last season. After joining the Irons on loan from the Blues in January, Disasi helped Nuno Espírito Santo’s side keep six clean sheets in the Premier League.

Despite eventual relegation, the Hammers became much more defensively resolute following Disasi’s arrival. Additionally, the 28-year-old was a very likeable character who quickly endeared himself to the West Ham faithful.

There was still hope that Nuno’s side could acquire Disasi on a permanent basis this summer, even in the Championship. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, he is set to secure another top-flight loan move.

Romano gave his trademark ‘Here We Go’ claim on the move on Friday morning, with Disasi due to undergo his medical later in the day.

It’s a shame for West Ham. Disasi was seen as a legitimate target that would hugely improve their squad. Additionally, the Irons potentially held off on other moves in the hope the Frenchman would sign.

Now, Disasi’s return looks less likely than ever. The Frenchman’s move to Palace puts the Hammers in an awkward position. Even if West Ham secure promotion this season, Disasi surely won’t be worth pursuing again.

The Irons will find themselves in a lose-lose situation regarding the defender next summer. If Disasi is successful at Selhurst Park, the Eagles will be keen to sign him.

Likewise, if he rarely features for Pierre Sage’s side, he’ll be back at square one, low on confidence and 18 months older than when he initially arrived in East London.

This move stinks of the Lingard saga and likely signals the end of West Ham’s relationship with the player. While disappointing, the Irons must now turn their attention to capable alternatives and also ensure that they hold onto star defender Konstantinos Mavropanos this season.

“Star defender Konstantinos Mavropanos” – imagine saying that to a West Ham fan a year ago.
