Nuno Espirito Santo needs to change his and the team’s mentality and sort out his team selection tonight, or he could find himself jobless very soon.

A loss tonight isn’t going to get the Portuguese manager sacked because I can’t imagine the Carabao Cup is a priority for us this season. But after the result at the weekend, a loss tonight and failure to get a win at Watford, or at home against Wolves next Tuesday, could mean it’s curtains for the former Spurs manager.

The atmosphere around the club is awful at the moment; the fans aren’t happy with the lack of real ambition, the time it took to get signings in, and the performances on the pitch. A lot of us who were willing to give Nuno a second chance are starting to doubt that already.

The way he’s set out his teams so far this season has been really confusing in a lot of ways. The instruction to defend when we’ve got by far the most talented squad in the league is insanely frustrating, and when we do manage to get in the lead we defend it instead of going for more, that Burnley game epitomised that.

Then because we’ve set out with such defensive tactics, when we go down early like we did against Charlton on Saturday, the players have no idea how to break down the defence because it doesn’t seem like we’re focusing on attack at all in training.

That brings us to team selection, some of Nuno’s picks this crazy have been shocking. Not quite as bad as when he tried to play inverted full-backs with Ollie Scarles at right-back, but still bad.

On Saturday, he decided to play Piroe as the deeper striker in a from two rather than Taty and persisted with it until we had to go all out attack because we couldn’t break them down. Surprisingly when Piroe wasn’t trying to play in the ten we started playing well.

He also played Mo Kante as the deepest midfielder in a 4-4-2, asking him to get the ball off of the defence, start the attacks and pull the strings against a sitting defence. That was absolutely embarrassing from Nuno considering he had both Ward-Prowse and Orford on the bench.

Nuno needs to scrap this defence first approach and stop making ridiculous decisions with the starting XI an I believe we can really turn this around quickly after a very poor start.
