West Ham get their first win of the 26/27 Championship season with a 4-2 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Since the draw away at Watford on Saturday we were all dreading this match, and that dread got even worse when the starting XI was announced.

A 4-4-2 with no Taty or Orford, a strike partnership of Piroe and Pablo, Scarles starting, and an attacking midfielder in central midfield.

The midfield hadn’t been working whatever he tried, so he basically sacrificed the midfield to improve elsewhere and it worked.

Despite our form, I did have some secret hope because this is the sort of game Nuno’s style of football suits. Wolves are the only team with a similar level of talent in their squad as us in the division, so we knew they would go for it more than Charlton for example.

Other teams going for it suits the way Nuno wants to play and we saw that today, especially in the second half.

The first half an hour or so was a hard watch, however, when Divine Mukasa’s incredible weak footed strike hit the back of the net the game changed in our favour.

Wolves started to attack more straight after the goal and we looked so much more dangerous on the counter. A brilliant turn by Piroe earned us a penalty after being fouled in the box.

Captain Jarrod Bowen fired home the spot kick to put us two to the good.

However, the lead didn’t last long. The Hammers players seemed to get too exited and Marshall Munetsi found himself in behind, he finished well past Hermansen.

At half time, just after Wolves had got one back, all the fans were worried Nuno would just sit back and try hold on to the one goal lead.

However, Divine Mukasa had other sides. He had another shot from distance, and this time it got a huge deflection to loop over Jose Sa’s head and drop into the back of the net.

Wolves were trying to get another back, so naturally the Hammers were defending more, but with a comfortable lead that was understandable.

Taty and Veltman came on just before the hour mark which really helped. But it was another experienced player that scored the fourth, after initially getting on the end of Engels’ corner Mavropanos smashed the ball into the back of the next on the volley inside the box.

Wolves did get another one back, just five minutes after scoring, Konstantinos ended a Wolves attack by sliding the ball into the back of his own net.

In the crowd we were all expecting the worst, but Nuno didn’t panic. He brought on an extra midfielder bringing on Lamadrid and Kante for Pablo and Mukasa to manage the game.

Apart from a Fer Lopez shot from outside the box that was well saved by Hermansen, the visitors didn’t really worry us again.

It was far from a vintage performance, but we showed our quality and beat one of the favourites to win the league pretty comfortably.

This is a brilliant opportunity to build on this performance going into the Derby game on Saturday.
