Konstantinos Mavropanos’ poor form continued against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Understandably, this summer was full of praise for Konstantinos Mavropanos because it was clear from quite early on that he was going to stay at the club despite relegation.

After a brilliant second half to the season last season, even though we were relegated, his stock is probably the highest it’s been since he first signed for the club from Stuttgart.

However, I never really got why people thought he was worth £30m+ and why people thought he would be far and away the best central defender in the Championship.

Before Axel Disasi arrived in East London, Mavropanos was never rated by many Hammers fans; in fact, he used to get booed and rated as badly as Max Kilman gets. He was rash, clumsy, stiff, and not very good on the ball.

This is exactly what we’re seeing from him again this season. Why is that? It’s because he hasn’t got Axel Disasi next to him. The fact that he looks just as bad as he did in the Championship as he did in the PL before the Frenchman came in at the end of last season is worrying.

His woeful defending allowed Marshall Munetsi to score Wolves’ first goal last night, and he scored an unlucky own goal, but still his fault. He did score a goal, which was brilliant to see, and he got a very good reception, but that’s not his job; his volley technique is good, but he needs to improve his defensive game pronto.

What’s even more worrying is that Max Kilman has been so much better than him so far this season. However, a lot of fans are still scapegoating Kilman for us conceding a lot of goals when Dinos has been a lot more at fault this season.

Look, it’s still very early in the season; there have only been six matches in all competitions, and Dinos has only played in four of them. The Greece international has a lot of time to turn it around and become the hero he almost was at the end of the season, but at the moment it doesn’t look promising.

If it were up to be I’d start Golambeckis over him against Derby on Saturday, but that’s unlikely, so we need to back him and the team.
